HGV / Equipment Technician
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Joint Transport and Logistics Department for Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service for an experienced Commercial Vehicle Technician. The successful applicant will join the Joint Department team of technicians who are responsible for maintaining this specialist fleet of vehicles and equipment. You should be a ‘time served’ Large Goods Vehicle (HGV) technician with a proven track record of vehicle maintenance, repairs, and diagnostics. The post will require you to have proven mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical experience. A category C driving licence is desirable for the role.
The overall purpose of the role will be to supply fit for purpose, legally compliant vehicles, and equipment for operational and support staff from Northamptonshire Police and Fire services to ensure maximum fleet availability is achieved across the county.

Further Information
You will be a key member of a small team, working in a busy department, dealing with all aspects of fleet and equipment maintenance and repair. You will be responsible for testing, servicing, and maintaining a huge variety of specialist vehicles and equipment.
The successful candidate will be ensuring that all fleet vehicles and equipment are maintained to all current legal and industry standards in accordance with manufacturers guidelines and the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA) national and best practice guidance, to ensure operational and support staff have fit for purpose and legally compliant vehicles and equipment which will allow them to carry out emergency and operational support across the county.
We are looking for a candidate who is a pro-active, level-headed and importantly an enthusiastic individual, who will need to have strong communication skills with the ability to develop strong working relationships with staff at all levels of the organisation.
Part of this role is call out 1 week in 4 weeks. This will provide out-of-hours cover for the service and major incidents.
We will consider applications from time served HGV and PSV mechanics and will provide additional training as required for the more specialist aspects of the role.

Recruitment and Selection Policy
Internal applicants who are at risk of redundancy or in need of redeployment and pass the selection process, will be offered the role over the remaining internal and external applicants.
Internal applicants must have line manager support prior to proceeding with an application.
Please be aware that the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner and Northamptonshire Police are separate employers. Although Police internal vacancies are open to OPFCC staff and vice versa, if you are successful, the change of employer will require a longer onboarding process and you will receive a new contract and payroll number. Service with either employer can be carried over as continuous service.
Police Barred and Advisory lists
Individuals placed on the Police Barred and Advisory lists will not be considered for employment by the Police or OPFCC for a minimum of 5 years from the date of listing in the case of gross misconduct, or 3 years from the date of listing in the case of poor performance.
